Terminology

text based
Refers to a program that does not create its own windows. Text based programs are designed to be used over telnet or modem connections where is it not possible or feasible to use a windows based program.

X Window based
Refers to a program that requires a windowing system. The only supported windowing system is the X Window System.

Email Addresses
In order to send someone electronic mail you need to know their email address. On the Internet email addresses formatted like the following:
username@machine_name.site_name.group_name
For example, your email address at HSRL is:
username@hsrl.rutgers.edu

Host Addresses
In order to connect to a remote machine whether by Telnet, FTP, Gopher, etc... You need to know the host's Internet address. On the Internet host addresses are formatted like the following:
machine_name.site_name.group_name
For example, HSRL's FTP address is:
ftp.hsrl.rutgers.edu
